Title: Recovering Edge
Post by: Baron_Erich on <01-28-22/1652:51>
Hi,
New user here with a (hopefully) simple question.

This question came up in a recent game and I can't seem to find a clear answer to it.
How do you recover edge?
Specifically, can edge earned in combat be carried over after the combat ends?

Thanks

Page 45 in the core rulebook.  Here's what happens to Edge at the end of a confrontation (not just combat):

Quote
Characters start a gaming session with Edge
points equal to their Edge rank. In the session,
Edge can be carried over and accumulated up to
a limit of 7, including the Edge provided by the
character’s Edge attribute. Any Edge garnered over
your base attribute goes away when you complete
any ongoing confrontation; this includes com-
bat, hacking, social persuasion, and any situation
where bonus Edge might be accumulated. If, at the
end of the confrontation, your current Edge points
are less than your Edge attribute, you stay at the
lower level. If you want more Edge, you have to
earn it.

Examples:
Character A has an Edge attribute of 4 and ends the combat with 2 points of Edge.  They keep on going with just those two points of Edge.
Character B has an Edge attribute of 4 and ends the combat with 6 points of Edge.  They keep on going with 4 points of Edge.

When do you recover Edge?  Your Edge pool refreshes at the beginning of the gaming session.

How do you recover edge?
Edge points reset to your Edge attribute at the start of a new game session.

During confrontations (not only combat, also hacking, racing, negotiations, etc) you can earn edge points by having tactical advantages over your opponents. Edge points can also be earned from good role playing.

can edge earned in combat be carried over after the combat ends?
After the confrontation any overflow Edge points above your Edge attribute are lost. You keep the rest.

Anyone else see that the Edge rules kind of contradict themselves.  It say you can garner and collect edge up to the maximum, and from combat, etc.  but  then you lose it because you had to do combat.  So you can get over your base of 4 from various things, but because you hit combat, your edge is reset?

Not sure I fully agree with you there.

Tactical advantage you gain above your Edge Rating is meant to be spent during that shoot-out or during that hack etc. You don't lose that extra advantage because you had to do combat, you lose it because you didn't spend it during the confrontation and the confrontation now ended.

Characters that invest into a higher Edge Rating get to "save" some of them extra Edge Points after the confrontation ended, which mean they have the potential to start the next confrontation with more Edge Points than characters with a lower Edge Rating (and if you have a higher Edge Rating then you also get to start each new game-session with a bigger bank of Edge Points).

First, Edge isn't reset. It's reduced back to the cap if you had an excess at the end of a confrontation.

Second, you don't lose excess Edge because a fight starts. You lose it because the fight ends. So if my Edge is down to 1, my Attribute is 5, a fight starts, I gain Edge all the way up to the max of 7, then after the fight I'm cut down back to 5. But if I kept spending it and end the fight at 3, well, I stay at 3.
