Title: [SR5] Shadowrun Tarot Deck
Post by: AJCarrington on <08-13-15/0705:40>
From Tumblr (http://catalystgamelabs.tumblr.com/post/126540251286/shadowrun-art), starting to preview some of the art:

From Echo Chernik's FB (https://www.facebook.com/echoxartist) page:

And so it begins... the slow tease campaign of over 78 illustrations I'm doing for Shadowrun.
For those fans that have known me for awhile - this is one of the Dream Projects that interrupted me this past year. Its not something I could turn down, nor is it something I could put off without turning it down.
Lazarus is helping out a lot on it - and we hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do making it.

78 illustrations...nice, very nice, indeed ;D

Very nice, I see from the tumblr it said staves, so I am guessing Ace, Page or Queen of Wands (Staves)?

I am leaning toward betting it is Page as that is the more adventurous of the trio, but I could see elements of the other two as well here.

This is a really interesting idea... so is this a Lesser or Greater Arcana set? If it's a Greater Arcana I think I'll be finding it really difficult to resist.

Wow, that's incredible.

Are you looking for artists to contribute? Are all the cards spoken for? I'd love to participate.

Echo is doing the entire deck herself. This is a project she has been wanting to do for some time.

It's a  full-sized Tarot deck being published by Catalyst next year. The art is applicable to the Shadowrun universe and will have plot relevance beyond looking cool.

Nope, tarot decks are not the same as playing card decks (although it is speculated that playing card decks evolved from tarot decks). Tarot decks are a tool for divination. It'd take too long to go into here, but you can do some searches for tarot decks, and you should be able to easily find some more detailed information.
Title: Re: [SR5] Shadowrun Tarot Deck
Post by: Mirikon on <11-18-15/1429:15>
Tarot decks are divination tools. They are divided into the Minor and Major Arcana. Minor Arcana encompasses four suits (Swords, Wands, Cups, and Pentacles) with 14 cards each (Ace to 10, and then the Knave, Knight, Queen, and King), and each suit representing a certain element. Swords are associated with Fire, Wands with Earth, Cups with Water, and Pentacles with Air. The Major Arcana is a set of 22 cards with singular figures, such as the High Priestess, the Tower, or Death. Each card in the Minor and Major Arcana has two meanings, one when it is placed right side up, and the other when it is 'inverse', or upside down. A typical reading takes between 3 to 10 cards, depending on the array you use, with each card having a different interpretation of its meaning based on its position in the array.

Tarot card decks are not normally used for card games.
not as much now, but originally they were playing cards that just happened to be used later on in divination, which often made use of a wide range of common things to foretell with.

I still prefer roasting the bones of my enemies and reading the future through the patterns of cracks on their charred surfaces, aka pyro-osteomancy.

>_>

<_<

Ahem.

You can still occasionally see people playing tarot as a card game in France and a few of the eastern European countries.

If you ever want to try your hand at a game, there is a good site here (http://www.pagat.com/tarot/frtarot.html) explaining the rules of play for the French version, though some do prefer the Slovenian version (http://www.pagat.com/tarot/sltarok.html).

What would really be awesome is a pdf of of the art alone, with no tarot.  I'd love to have the art, have some personal qualms about purchasing a tarot deck.  As a second choice, pdf of the deck.

I would expect a PDF version of the deck would be released...you could always extract the images and not use the "deck". Also, Echo Chernik, the artist, typically does a KS at least once a year...often has the option to buy various prints. I've got a number of pieces via these that can be found on the covers and pages of SR books.

Awesome AJ, thanks. I'm running with a group of friends who have little experience with Shadowrun.  Currently the GM is having some difficulty getting the flavor right. Often feels like 2015 with magic and tech. Needs more dystopia. I thing the art will help set the stage in everyone's mind.

The original 'tarot' card decks were used for many, many card games.  The whole sortilage thing came about only well after their gaming use was popular.  (Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot) has a good, accurate article on it.)

A couple of posts from Echo Chernik on FB:

Quote
Love Shadowrun? Besides my prolific portfolio of mainstream advertising work, I still make time to create work for this really awesome game. One thing that you have to know about me - I've been playing Shadowrun since college. Second ed. My husband Lazarus has been playing since first - and we'll be playing later today. SO this is a passion for us. I illustrate a gritty world, where the armor doesn't match, there's opulence crossed with gritty street dystopia. Right now, the big project that's been announced is the Shadowrun Tarot. We've been slaving away on this for two years! It's AMAZING, if I do say so myself. On the first level it's a tarot deck. On the second level, it's a visual run generator. Third level it's chock full of fun stuff for GM's to play with - puzzles. And the Fourth level is a secret. You'll have to follow along to figure that one out! I'll be posting art here, and links to anything released about the tarot. Maybe i'll even post sneak peeks of new cards, but I have to stay within the release schedule of the deck. Feel free to enjoy the art. One thing people love about my art is the little details. DON'T underestimate that in the new tarot. It's ALL about the little details. grin emoticon Glad you're here! :> x

The teal dots means the cards are finished :D:

I believe that it is now in "production"...i.e. preparing for release to printers (though I'd be surprised if they didn't try to have something on hand for GenCon). Not sure re actual timeline when it will be available to purchase. Not that this isn't just about the tarot deck, there is also a supplement with rules/tie in to SR5. Hopefully we'll see more in the coming weeks as we ramp up to the summer convention season.

From Echo's FB page on the subject:
Quote
If you are in Seattle, come by my THE END HAS COME party tomorrow night at Verne and Wells in Kirkland at 6pm. We are celebrating the FINISHED SHADOWRUN TAROT DECK - along with a preview of the art, tarot readings, cake, and a small selection of tarot prints in bullet hole frames! We've been slaving away for two years on this project - so the party is mostly to show my kids that they are getting their parents back soon!!

Now granted they are just celebrating and does not tell us when the final deck for the rest of us will hit the shop, but just wish I could go to Seattle  for this because art AND cake sounds awesome. :P

Not that this isn't just about the tarot deck, there is also a supplement with rules/tie in to SR5. Hopefully we'll see more in the coming weeks as we ramp up to the summer convention season.
Edit
Quote from: Tumblr
]We decided to use the Sixth World Tarot thematically in order to develop fully fleshed out the Seelie Court’s factions that are active in this world. Each represents a group of fae that are not only pursuing a goal that best represents the Major Arcana, but also helps add layers of meaning to the faeries you and your players will encounter in the Court of Shadows. In fact, this bit is so important I’m going to write about it next time, too, because you’ll get to see how and when and where all these pieces will align in new and interesting ways.

Now that is interesting.

Also maybe could have something like guidelines for using a 5 card/other layout spread to size up a situation on a run for the team as well.

Card 1:   The present or general theme of the reading
Reflecting the situation at hand, whether it's trying to decide to even take the job or showing them they are in a bit over their head.

Card 2:   Past influences still having effect.
Reminders to the team of an Enemies/Hunted by who might be turning up shortly or similar.

Card 3:   The most likely outcome if they follow this path.
Could warn of a potential trap/doublecross or other teasers/tips the GM wants to throw at them.

Card 4:   Could Represent the Johnson and his reasons behind the run or just a particular situation the runners are stymied by, like another runner team in play who just extracted their target right before they could.
So the Cards could warn that the Johnson is out for revenge against the target on a personal vendetta instead of business or who might be behind the other runner team who just upstaged them or may give a clue about their mission goal they were not aware of.

Card 5:   The potential within the situation.
Maybe foreshadowing a chance for the team to pick up some extra shinies along the way, whether its some 'ware or a bit of extra paydata or a clue to some ongoing quest by one of the team.

Now taking preorders on the mini print deck. 80 pieces of art in card format. Signed, with a unique back to each card. This is the art from the tarot, but without the puzzle bottom piece that the actual tarot deck will possess. SO, this is for people that want the art, but maybe not the game supplement. It does have all the art, and it is signed. We are doing free shipping with the preorders. Since we are printing them domestically, they should be in in around 2 weeks, and I will get them out quickly. pm me if interested. $75. We are doing a low number of these, so there won't be many available.

If you're interested, would suggest that you drop her a PM pretty quick.

Last chance to preorder the mini print art deck of my Shadowrun work before I open it to the public. I offered it here first to the Shadowrun group.  They are $75, free shipping with the pre-order. They should be in in about two weeks, and I'll be sending them out promptly, signed of course.  They contain *all* the tarot art pieces plus one, but do not contain the puzzle bottom or backs of the actual tarot which will be out in the fall. So, this is for people who would like a very very limited edition piece, and want it just for the art, from the artist.  It has an alternate back which is super cool, btw - only these decks will have that back.  So, just pop me a pm if you would like to pick one up - I'm beginning to have my doubts that I will have any left for Gencon!

You can still ask for the limited edition (on Facebook), there are still a few left.

No release date on the SR deck yet, though I believe they are trying to have advance copies for GenCon.

As Imladir noted, you can get a deck of the art direct from Echo Chernik by contacting her directly on FB. The cost is $75 and includes shipping (not sure about international). This is NOT the same as the deck CGL will be releasing, though the card art is the same.

For international shipping (or at least, for European shipping), add $25.

For those going to GenCon:

Shadowrun Sixth World Tarot

Look Closer!

When you look at this tarot deck, what do you see? You can’t miss the 78 cards with gorgeous, original art by Echo Chernik, that adapt tarot arcana to Shadowrun’s Sixth World. But look closer. Examine the details. Explore connections. Do you see them? Are you catching everything the cards have to tell you?

Are you seeing enough?

The Sixth World Tarot is a complete deck of Shadowrun-themed tarot cards, useful as game props, plot hooks, or any other purpose tarot cards are for!

Gen Con Only: This is a Gen Con edition; a slightly different edition will be available outside Gen Con at a later time.

I have a question about the GenCon Tarot Deck:
So I spent a Friday night in my game shop showing off the deck.  While folks were admiring the cards I looked at the little book that comes with it.  It very good little resource but I noticed it lacked something.  It mentions the Tree of Life spread in the booklet for reading the cards.  However, the explanation to how to use that particular reading is missing.  My guess is the tree of life is for making a character using the tarot cards themselves.  So where is it?  Do I need to purchase a non-GenCon deck to get a hold of it?

Was going to make a joke about someone upstairs not playing with a full deck if they goofed on the booklet already, but it's pretty minor as there are tons of webpages for this.

The image from Eira's link is a pretty traditional layout

As for the meaning of the different spots there are various ways to read them

1.This will be your highest ideal, goal and ideal attainment
2.This will be your driving force, sometimes an event or person.
3.This card represents what will aid you in life.
4.This card represents all which you hold dear and sacred.
5.This represents the impact you will have on others while journeying to attain your goal
6.This represents your physical state in regards to health and how you affect others
7.This represents influential people you will meet, lovers and great friends
8.This represents a good a career or pursuit for you which you will find fulfilling
9.This represents the you that you do not know; hidden desires and currently locked potential
10.This card represents your physical self and the world around you.

A slight variation has it go as follows:
1.Your Highest Ideals
2.Your Creative Pow
3.Your Wisdom
4.Your Virtues
5.The Force of Your being
6.Your Health, Beauty and Altruism
7.Your Loves, Lusts, Artistic Self and Instincts
8.You as a Procreator, Designer and Scientist
9.Your Imagination and Psychic Self
10.Your Physical Self

I use the tree of life spread almost exclusively, as it is usually the most thorough. I'll use a different spread every one in a while if I'm seeking a more specific answer, but most people won't/don't use anything other than the tree of life.

... but most people won't/don't use anything other than the tree of life.

... sorry, no.  While it depends on what you're doing the spread for, most people don't use anything other than the Celtic Cross (http://www.psychic-revelation.com/reference/q_t/tarot/tarot_spreads/celtic_cross.html) spread - which is almost universally the only one included in most of the booklets which you receive with the tarot deck itself.  While the Tree of Life is a good look at 'you now', it tends to be centric on the individual's self (or as my runic books would say, Self), and not on a broader scope, no matter its decription as a 'general' spread.

The rest of the spreads (http://www.psychic-revelation.com/reference/q_t/tarot/tarot_spreads/index.html) on their site look to be a good sampling, though I know of at least four different ones I use regularly that aren't there.

Hmm, I guess we walk very different paths then. Tree of Life is the very first one I was taught, and the other vǫlur in my kindred use it almost exclusively like I do. We try not to peer to far into the future, since it is never truly set in stone and can change depending on every little decision we make. Besides, people are mostly only ever curious about themselves, in my experience.

I'd say so, yes.  I'd never so limit myself, or presume that the experiences of me and my closest confidantes were the general default.

*Contemplates the query about the deck forthcoming and turns over a lone Tarot card, revealing The Devil*

Your answer is  NO

Quote
The Devil card represents jealousy related to possessions here.
You want that deck that some warehouse has, and this produces constant irritation.
You will have to let go of what you desire for now, as you will not be able to obtain it at this time.
Otherwise it will simply be self-torture.

So the official answer from the writer (me) is this:

Oops. I wrote that sentence completely intending to include a third spread. Because of the rush for the GenCon booklet, it wasn't caught in editing. It should have been amended to either only describe the two spreads that were included or to include a third one.

Great catch. Errata.

Thanks.

Just got notified that my order for the Sixth World Tarot Deluxe I ordered from Minature Market has now shipped via FedEx and on it's way.

Granted it's coming to the UK so still have a small wait for it to get here, but still very much a squeeeeeee moment.

Saw it at my FLGS on the weekend, but at just two bucks less than a source book I've not yet broken down to buying it.

I PO'd a non-deluxe from MM which, unfortunately, is not showing stock yet. Hopefully in the near future rather than Dec. or whatever they have as what I assume is more of a CYA estimated date.

Well it got here Friday while I was away teaching for the weekend, but had customs due, so couldn't pick it up from the PO until today, but now it's in my hands.

Shiny. :)

@NinthSphere:  Yeah, no idea why the regular deck is not out yet on MM or even when.

Hopefully soon.

I ordered mine from Echo Chernik's website (see AJ's link below), and it arrived last week. Very nice.

Just got my tarot deck and Echo Arcana today. It's really awesome. Here is a link (https://i.redd.it/as7qrjq4msgz.jpg) because the file size too big and I'm too lazy to recompress.

It looks like they have a new printing in the Catalyst store:  https://store.catalystgamelabs.com/collections/featured-products-homepage/products/shadowrun-sixth-world-tarot-arcanist-edition

Now I'd like to know if it is going into distribution, so that I'd have a chance of getting it through my FLGS instead?
