In Forbidden Arcana, under the intro to Magic Mastery qualities (pg. 31), there is the following note:

Quote
A character may exchange spells they receive from their selection on the Magic/Resonance priority chart for 5 Karma to spend on mastery qualities, but any Karma that is leftover from purchasing these qualities cannot be spent on other things or kept after character generation.

How is this handled if one is playing with point buy? Is it just not an option?

Yes. Since you can't exceed 25 points of positive qualities anyway, it doesn't really matter either.

Oh? Hmm... Found a few threads discussing Magic Mastery on Reddit and they made it sound like the points that came from spell exchange did not count towards the positive quality limit. eg.,

Quote
C Magic or higher can exchange spells for a pile of karma. A Mage / Mystic adept potentially has 50 extra karma to throw at Mastery Qualities.

If that's not the case, it really doesn't matter. Seems odd though - why bother adding a rule that allows for sacrificing spells to gain more of these qualities if they're still bound by the same limit?

If you are looking for the rule: FA p. 31
"Mastery qualities count toward the maximum amount of Karma a character may spend on positive qualities at character generation."

You can use karma for other stuff - skills, attributes or (with permission) initiations.
