I'm going to start running SR for my group and for now we are only using the core book. 

I was hoping to pick the brains of some experienced GMs to see if there are any issues with doing this?  The main thing I am worried about is Unwired.  Does this book make the matrix easier to understand or does overcomplicate things?

In two years of playing a game every 2 weeks, I have yet to use Unwired.  So, unless you are likely to have lots of Matrix stuff going on, you don't need it.  You can run with just the core book, but Arsenal and Street Magic add lots of flavour.

Thats good to know, and I'm not even sure how much our group will get into the hacking side of things though.

And we'll definitely be adding more books once we get the hang of the basics

That's probably the best way to go. Although throwing in RC and Augmentation from the beginning will help them have a little more diversity without getting too deep in new rules.
