>>>>>[Nothing to kick off the weekend like a bit of 'housekeeping'. And by that, I mean 'killing these bastards who were trying to follow me'. Seems they got the idea after seeing me leave a jeweler's under my legit SIN while I was picking up a gift for Xerena. With all the cunning one might expect of Humanis goons, they got the woman to try and lure me into an alley for a quickie, where her 'friends' were waiting for me. I think they were under the impression that the sword was just for show. Two of them are feeling much lighter now, with the useless weight above their shoulders removed. Two others are down, but still alive. Maybe they'll even wake up before the van that just loaded them up gets to the 'processing center'. Hm? Oh yeah, lady, those were ghouls, and yes, they were Tamanous, and yes, your buddies are ghoul chow. Now shut up, I'm talking here.

Where was I? Oh yes, the woman is currently tied up but alive. And she's going to stay that way, for now. A contact in Tarislar heard that his sister had been 'recruited' to work in a bunraku parlor downtown. So I worked out a trade. The lady listening to me in growing horror is going to be a bunraku girl, my contact gets his sister back, and we all keep quiet on this, so the gumi doesn't lose face with the Puyallup crowd while they're trying to grow their presence. Oh, and I'm going to do a job for the gumi to keep all things square. Nothing much, just escorting a daughter of one of the clan's members to a concert in Denver. Yes, they have their own people for bodyguard duty, but she is technically a 'civilian', and sending clan members with a civilian into another clan's territory usually takes a great deal of negotiation. Its an honor and respect kind of thing. With this, no one loses face. Yak politics are almost as twisted as corp politics.]<<<<<

>>>>>[ You're totally right about that, Wyrm.  A lot of activities you do here in the shadows, you do there right in the open and nobody gives a damn.  Although there are regular 'shadowjobs', even in Lagos.  I once had to extract a scientist over there.  The only difference is that if you shoot a couple of guards in the process, nobody cares.  It's just seen as 'doing business'.  In fact, one of the megas once dropped a Thor missile on a slum just to get to a couple of hackers. ]<<<<<

>>>>>[Been all three places, Smudge, and while I was indeed paid quite well, there's a difference between the shadows and merc jobs or wetwork, as Wyrm said. For the shadow gigs you do find in those places (courier jobs and escorts, mainly) there are local players who are better at it than almost any outsider. No matter your personal skill level, some jobs require knowledge of the area, the kind of stuff you only learn after living there for 20 years. Just like I would never trust a Manhattan cabbie to get me around Seattle, and I would rather pick a local to get a package from one side of Denver to the other than someone from CalFree. Not knocking the talent that moves around, mind you. Done that myself at times. But you got to be at least three times as good as a local to beat them at their game, on their turf. Same reason gangers are much stronger on their turf than off it. They know all the area's secrets, and have support they can call on if they need it.

Still, none of those places holds a candle to Yomi Island, back before the Ring of Fire blew up and the new Emperor decided shipping all the metahumans to a prison island was bad. This was during my mandatory military service. Picture a Search and Rescue mission, on a prison island, in the middle of a permanent riot, with HMHVV running rampant. Lost a good man on that mission, and it was a failure, since the target had already been turned into a banshee. We put her down, but failed missions where you lose people always hurt. Especially since I had to finish the infected soldier myself.]<<<<<
