Yah, after the 400k limit, they opened up paypal.
They did not at first, because paypal does not allow refunding later on if the project does not meet the target.

The Cliffhanger Shadowrun MMO is also supposedly taking Donations, but I can't seem to get it to work. Some of the rewards for donating sound pretty sweet for that game too.
