Okay. I want to start by saying I love storytelling.  I also love interacting with people who like the same type of stuff that I do. That being said, there is ALOT of stuff here. I played mostly homebrewed D&D back in the 90s and early 2000s. I played what was called AD&D and was familiar with that type of rule system.  Then I heard about Shadowrun and was immediately interested, but apparently I was the only one. I couldnt find anybody to play with so I laid it down. I read the Shadowrun stories that were put out, but didn't go into the game itself. I was busy raising a family, so I really didn't have a lot of 'spare' time.  Fast forward to now and I find all of this stuff. I am a bit overwhelmed and am really interested in this play by post thing, but I am unfamiliar with this type of forum. I am having problems interacting hrre as well (apparently I come off as rude.) Can some one explain to me how to use these 'bits' of code in posts. I have some programming ability. But is all pre 90s stuff when we wrote whole programs, not just bits. Trying to figure out all the rules and learn the tech is a bit much. Any help is appreciated.

Hi there, a lot of play-by-post games are pretty newb friendly -- most PbP is much more role play than dice rolling anyway.  That said, there hasn't been much PbP on these forums for a while (there was a stretch with a lot of down time for this site, so games mostly migrated to other platforms).  I might suggest checking out RPGcrossing, which is a large community of PbP for all sorts of game systems including ShadowRun.

As for PbP etiquette
- The biggest thing is not controlling other players' characters (for example, you don't write "My character 'Able' and Bob's character 'Blaster' lay down suppression fire."  Instead something more like ,"My character 'Able' lays down suppression fire, and calls out to Blaster 'Keep them from coming through the door'." (and ask other players, don't tell them, and for that matter most of that should happen 'in character' (IC) rather than in out of character (OOC) conversation

- Generally working with what others have posted, even if you don't agree that it is the best course of action.  A one hint on this guideline is to look up the 'rules' of doing Improv and sort of translate those.

- Not everyone will have the same posting schedule: be patient!  But try to post regularly yourself.

Good luck finding a game, and hey maybe I'll see you at a virtual table one of these days.

Thanks for the info, Beta. So the PbP is kind of stalled here? I'm always late to the party! =( Out of curiosity, does anybody here play on Roll20?

Some do! But if you're looking for a game online, check out SR Missions Online.

I am running a 'newb friendly' 6E game over on RPGCrossing... feel free to check it out!  It's ongoing but I've tried to set it up to slot in new characters at any point as pbp is notorious for losing players along the way  ::)

I hadn't wanted to put Aria on the spot, which is why I'd pointed you to RPGCrossing in general rather to that game in particular -- but I can vouch that Aria has been running succesful PbP games for many years now (and using quite a few platforms, starting at least in 5e -- I'm not sure just how far back, I wasn't in their first games but I've played with them on-and-off for rather a lot of years now, including in that current game).

Np, Beta. I still have a lot to learn about these type forums (posting and such) as well as abbreviations. This looks to be html based coding, and the closest thing Ive come to that is Wordpress Templates. That and being a newb to the SDR Game mechanics kind of puts me way behind the 8 ball so to speak. It may take me awhile to sort thru it all.

I think some of it might be subtly different on other forum sites (this one or Dumpshock are the two I know) but it's a good place to start

Every site has different coding.

I actually find RPG Crossing a bit overwhelming with all the formatting possibilities. My general strategy is to steal someone else's formatting. (By hitting the "quote" button on the post you like, then copying and pasting the results before editing to make them your own.)

The same general approach works on all play-by-post sites. There are many out there, but Shadowrun games are admittedly not common.
