Christ, it's seriously ridiculous.  I had eight pages in my Unread Topics list.  I don't even get it...  Everyone immediately identifies it as spam, and it's not even on-topic for "stuff people who go to this forum would like".  I can only assume it's intended to be an annoying prank as opposed to a marketing thing.
