I believe you're right.  In 4e it was a single skill, in 5th it's a whole group.

If you're going to use crossbows primarily, I'd suggest Incompetence (Firearms).  Maybe he just can't deal with the recoil when he's actually holding it since he only knows how to fire them in mounts.

Also, if you're Human with D Metatype, you should have 5 edge.  You could probably also get away with a 2 in STR, and up your CHA to 4.  I'd get rid of your Riggers knowledge (sounds too specific anyways) and pick something like "Border Security" for the times when you're not aware of a better way around--  Knowing what kind of scans you'll have to undergo would help a lot.

I'd say go for Incompetent (Biotech) or Incompetent (Acting). :)

mate, i think one of the key things a smuggler needs to be able to do is get through border crossings. i'd say you need to invest heavily in getting your social skills up. You're gonna need to smarm and charm through border security pretty regularly

Looking at Coyotes, social is only a small part of it.  You need to pass an SIN check, have your vehicle and self scanned for several things (MAD, chemical scanner, radiation, etc), and magicians will assense you...  Most of it is automated, done by drones or agents.

Alternatively, there's ways around them which would require high Knowledge skills and Navigation.

There also the purchasing and pick up side of things at source as well as the haggling with the merchants at destination.

When the sin check fails (which it might at a high security crossing) then it's much better to have the skills to charm the border guard that will be alerted than it is to try and shoot your way out of the situation
