Scan this, Chummers.

Imagine your runner team has both a Technomancer and a Decker. They decide to work together to hack a server (two jacked-in hot-simmed heads are better than one, right?). In order to not arouse suspicion as they enter the host, they both switch to silent running (-2 to matrix actions, but oh so sneaky). They enter the host and both make a Matrix perception test to find the paydata they want to steal. One finds it, the other doesn't.

The patrol IC is sitting quietly because it has no reason yet to suspect that there are icons running silently inside the host.

Now, here's the problem - if one silent-running hacker wants to let the other silent-running hacker know where the file is, how does he/she? Can they see each other? Do they have to Matrix Perception to find each other? Or can they just use the "Send Message" action to let the other know exactly where the file is?

Even if they weren't running silently, I'm not sure if they would be able to share that information. Location in the matrix seems to be very relative, particularly for these kinds of things. (Not that it matters, but I would probably use Matrix Search rather than Perception for that particular usage).

Also, to get around the whole "Can't see each other" they could each invite a MARK from the other before they started as you can see icons you've MARKed regardless of their attempt to hide or run silent, IIRC.

My gut reaction is that Data Trails will have the answer, as this sounds like it's verging on the description of a "Deep Dive."  There are no rules for teamwork tests in the Matrix yet, so honestly we just don't know.

If I had to make a ruling right now, I'd say that they can share the file's location after it's been found via the Send Message command.  This doesn't mean the file can be found instantly, but I would instead give a bonus to finding the file for the person that didn't find it the first time around.

... whereas my gut reaction is 'the first person who sees it filches it'.  Why, if they are working together, would the second individual need the location of the file they're out to heist??

Because the second individual might be the Attack specialist, while the other one is the Sleaze specialist; given that you can't grab the file without the shit hitting the fan, you want the cybercombat guy to grab it - especially if you need the sneaky guy to stay in.

Slightly off-topic but it is my interpretation that the Technomancer's Editor complex form can be used to steal the file, does everyone agree with that?

I imagine you can share icon-discoveries with others.  I imagine it'd be like sharing a URL; here's the address of this device, etc.  Maybe an IP would be a better comparison.  You have it's "location" in the matrix as data, I can't see why you couldn't give someone else that information.

I'd probably make it a Send Message action...  When such a thing as TacNets gets re-introduced, I'm sure you'll be able to set it up so that all of the linked persona can see any icons the others can see.  It just makes sense to me.

Or, going along the same lines, maybe the Attack specialist is needed to crack the file's protection?

Jeeze.  It would almost sound stupid until you realize we're talking about an immortal elf clown sword fighting a dragon ghost in a mall.

You automatically spot all icons in the entire host without taking a test
(as long as they are not running silent that is).

Finding the file icon where the pay data is hidden might take some time though
(but this is a Matrix Search test rather than a Matrix Perception test).
