While we agree that it would take some fancy wrangling to use a monowhip to bisect a door, ala the garrotte/looping methods as mentioned in yours and our own previous posts, might we also raise two points?

1) It's a game and suspension of disbelief is built into it so does it really break the game to allow them to use it like this even if it doesn't really hold up to regular physics?  There are a number of combat special maneuvers that can be dissected and dismissed in this form, but we still use them because in the end we want to play the game.

2) Going on and on about a lack of common sense in others is not going to necessarily convince those said others that you may be right. :P

Do you believe in a greater WIRELESS, an Invisible(WiFi) All Seeing(detecting those connected- at least if within 100'), All Knowing(all online data) Presence that we can draw upon for Wisdom(downloads & updates), Strength (wifi boni) and Comfort (porn) or do you turn your back on it  (Go Offline)?

I'd like to jump 10 stories but common sense tells me no.
Op asked if it was possible and no one has presented any rationale beyond lack of understanding that would justify it.
If people just want to post on the forums so others can validate them perhaps we should be handing out stars instead.
Of course you can do whatever you want in your game.

*Cough*

I do percentages after numbers.  So if it goes from x1.5 to x2, then +20%, I read it as 1.2 x (AGI x 2).  Of course, since you're doing all multiplication on that one, it doesn't really matter - but on the other, it'd be (AGI + Lvl) x 2.

It's the falling that I'm really enthusiastic about, though.  Freefall 8, Light Body 3, and Force 6 foci for each (Magic 12): jump out of a 13-story window 54m up and make a three-point supercool-style landing with No Problem Whatsoever, Baby.

*stacks 10 paperback novels on the floor and jumps over them*

Start with the cheap romances and work your way up to Rand and Tolstoy.

Sorry, couldn't resist.  ;D

Why do we have to stab the door with the whip?

Can't we just slash at the door (or whip it)?

It's a mono whip. I will slice and dice and deal DV 12 to just about anything it come in contact with.
It is not even depending on strength at all to deal that massive damage....

Unlike other editions SR5 does not have any specific rules regarding monowhips and barriers.
Either they forgot to add em or they deliberately removed them to make the rules more streamlined.

You are of course free to house rule that mono whips cannot be used to destroy barriers... but at least RAW-wise I don't see why mono whips should not use the same rules as all the other melee weapons (that deal physical damage).

In SR5 you can also use your pistol as an improvised melee weapon and break through barriers with that if you want...  ;)

Who needs to jump if you can just climb? A troll with STR 8 and Gymnastics 1 and no climbing gear manages 2 meters/IP (3 m with Gecko gloves) on a brick wall ;)

Imagine a door made out of butter and a "whip" made from a handle, 2m of very hot wire and a little piece of something that's is cold and is used as a weight (like a little sphere of half an inch diameter for example).

You hold the handle and "throw" the weight at the door (for example by making a sudden move with the handle in direction of the butter door).
The weight is cold and cannot go through the door, but some of the hot wire will cut through the door like a hot knife through butter. Depending how far away from the door you are, there will some length of wire that will form a loop partly on the other side of the door and you can move that loop a little and cut further, before the wire finally just hangs down because of its own weight and the weight of the littly sphere.
Important is, that a certain length of wire will travel through the door and the weight at the end does not, so in some shape or the other, there will be a cut in the butter door.

This is not the normal whipping motion and it depends very much on how much resistance the door gives and how "hot" the wire is, to determine if you think that a monowhip can cut holes into a door. If you think the door's resistance is quite high and the wire's own weight is very low, then the wire will be stuck in the door.
If you think monowhip can cut through literally anything without resistance, then the wire is extremely hot and will go through and make a loop and can cut a hole.

Choose what you want for your campaign. I personally like the idea of 4th edition, that I can damage the door, but only for 1 damage with each swing (the loop cutting little holes).

I have always pictured mono whipping through doors as EXTREME Jump rope 2076. Hold the weight on the tip, hold the handle, and say good bye to your feet just in case...

I know what you mean

In our neighbourhood it's a right of passage for the Skipper Grrlz Gang to do Monowire Double Dutch.

You can laugh at their name, but then you get 'invited' to a swift, and often bloody, MDD session.

I always thought that part of the "sharpness" of a monowhip came from being under tension....

You guys need to watch Johnny Pneumonic again.   One of the bad guys cut through the doorknob in seconds with a monowire whip in his cybernetic finger.    It should just be a regular attack at a barrier and completely possible.
