The Original RoboCop has themes of urban decay, man vs. machine,  megacorporations,  "winning" without winning, a dystopian future,  and not having control of your own life.  Even with the absence of magic, I believe this is the most Shadowrun Movie of all time.   Discuss.

It's very cyberpunk.

Bit so is Total Recall and a host of others.

AFAIK there are no cyberpunk & magic movies at all, well except perhaps some asian martial arts ones, kinda.

If / When it ever comes out: Kung Fury :P
Do you believe in a greater WIRELESS, an Invisible(WiFi) All Seeing(detecting those connected- at least if within 100'), All Knowing(all online data) Presence that we can draw upon for Wisdom(downloads & updates), Strength (wifi boni) and Comfort (porn) or do you turn your back on it  (Go Offline)?

Johnny Mnemonic was a great novella and horrible movie.

Pity we likely won't see another William Gibson novel turned into a movie after that one.

His original Neuromancer trilogy that started the whole cyberpunk thang is still AMAZING.

I watched John Wick last night, and Shadowrun themes just kept running through my head.  I won't spoil anything for anyone (not that there's a lot to spoil) but there's a great sense that there's this whole economy of crime in New York.  There's the hitmen, assassins and thugs of course - but there's a LOT of support staff that make all of this possible.  The writers for the movie really did a lot of work to envision and portray this entire concept in a really neat way that leaves the viewer thinking "that's neat" and "that's funny" and "that's badass" all at the same time.

By the way, I highly recommend the movie - if you want a popcorn flick that doesn't skimp on the badass factor, this is the one to see.  And for those that are ever curious about firearm use, particularly pistols - this movie does the best job I've seen of having a highly trained shooter acting realistically.  You can actually see Keanu lining up his shots and inhaling right before every squeeze of the trigger.  Which isn't to say he's slow, he's just not spraying bullets everywhere.  In fact, all of the shooters in the movie do a great job of being realistic.  There's a scene where a sniper is removing a silencer from a recently-fired rifle.  He licks his fingers first, because that silencer is about to be VERY hot.  Little details like that make this one of the best shooting films I've seen since Heat.
Feel free to keep any karma you earned illicitly, it's on us.

Strange Days is a really briliant movie in the sense of setting the overall tone of a world.

Brutal unrestrained police force, social unrest and the higher classes slumming through all that.

I could never understand why there is the Rocker archetype in shadowrun until I saw that movie.

I rank Ronin high on the inspirational viewing list.  Contemporary setting but absolutely hits the mentality on the head.

Blade runner, Robocop, and to a lesser extent Strange Days get it right, but lack any magical/supernatural elements.

I would pass on Judge Dredd, but the more recent Dredd was somewhat better (although very dark and violent).  Dredd has a slum arcology and some nice future gang stuff that fits with the genre.  Again no magic, but it does has psychic powers.

Strangely enough, the two films made directly from Bill Gibson's work, Johny Mnemonic and New Rose Hotel, were quite poor.  I can personally attest to the first.  The second is somewhat obscure and I have not seen it, but it has basically been universally panned by every source I can find on it.

Anyone contemplating watching Freejack should just hit themselves in the face with a shovel.  Its the same outcome and you don't waste two hours.

Just watched Transcendence, and it reminded me of CFD as detailed in Stolen Souls.

Oh, god! new rose hotel.

My friend and I were in the video store (way back when they still existed) and saw a movie based on a book by William Gibson, staring Willam DaFoe and Christifer Walken. Awesome! We thought. It was New Rose Hotel.

The first half of the movie was, to date, the most boring movie I'd ever watched. The second half is Willam DaFoe's character in a room, by himself, reminising about the first half.

I have never selected a movie based on the actors since.

The Leverage tv show, just watch it and you'll see what I mean. It isn't cyberpunk but it is Shadowrun-ish. The creator is a self professed SR fan.
