The trick Michael used to get into her dream is his dragonspeech. Maisie figured out the trick first as part of an initiation ordeal, and she in turn taught Michael. It allows them to hop into a target's dream and ease them out of it. It's meant to be used for nightmares (not the shadow spirit), to help the subject realize they're dreaming and regain control of what is happening, or simply wake up.
It is better to be crazy and know it, than to be sane and have one's doubts.

I'm familiar with Dragonspeech. IIRC, dragonkind and their "derivatives" (immortal elves, drakes) pick it up instinctively at some point in their life.

Yep, but the dream trick is new AFAIK.
