A magician's body is always considered a prepared vessel for any spirit he conjures, no special preparation is necessary.

but What type of spirit are these 'Some spirits', or does any spirits could or be command choose to possess instead?
Does the spirit need a 'Possession' critter's power to do a possess?

ex.
A troll Sioux magician want to command his bound Guardian spirit to always possess and protect his body every time he go for Astral projection.
or Summon an unbound element spirit to possess him and command them to use his body to fight.

I think you really have to reread the magic rules... especially magic traditions and summoning. Sioux is not a possession tradition!

Short answer.

1) Any spirits summoned by a magician following a possession tradition will be unable to materialize but can instead possess a prepared vessel.

2) A magician knowing the channeling metamagic can decide to have a spirit possess him/ her even if he/ she doesn't normally summon possession spirits. This decision must be made when the spirit is summoned.

Currently the Qabbalism, Vodou ( both found in "Street Grimoire" ), Egyptian and the Psionic ( both found in "Shadow Spells" ) traditions are the only possession traditions in the game.

So if you want a Sioux magician WHO can have spirits possess him, then you need the Channeling metamagic.

While we're talking about this, I'm still a little hazy on how possession works, and what constitutes a valid target for possession?  I've scoured the book but I must just keep missing the explanation.  Can you command a spirit to possess any creature or object?  Does it have to be willing?  How close do you have to be?

Under spirit powers in SG is an explanation of the possession power.

Basically there's one set of rules for living vessels(people) and a slightly different rules for non-living vessels(dead bodies, guns, brooms and whatnot).

The easiest thing to posses is a prepared vessel (which requires a ritual). Luckily, the summoning conjurer is always considered a prepared vessel.

The spirit rolls Forcex2 (with a +6DP for a prepared vessel) vs WIL+INT for a living vessel or against the object resistence for a non-living vessel to possess.

As to the effects of possession see the power SGp197 See also Spirit and Vessels SGp192, Possession and Inhabitation SGp184, Channeling and Exocism might interest you also.

So you CAN possess an unwilling target?  Like you can possess an enemy samurai to take him out of the fight while gaining a new samurai with spirit powers on your team?

Yes, but be wary that possession is inferior to materialization with regards to needed skills. You need ritual casting and alchemy to prepare the different kinds of vessels.

You have to 'prepare' that person somehow in order to do it.  Generally that is difficult to do if they're unwilling (especially in a fight), but Deepweed is a method of preparing vessels for Possession.  I've got a Voodoo Tradition Extraction Expert who puts spirits into the targets.  It keeps their bodies under his control, making them stronger, faster, tougher and less likely to panic when bullets fly.  It also keeps them from trying to turn on you.

If the target is unwilling but has been prepared, it is some kind of Opposed test.  Or, if it is the body of an Astrally Projecting mage, there is no roll AND it is considered prepared!
Would you want to go into a place where the resident had a drum-fed shotgun and can see in the dark?

That's not entirely true, otherwise you would never be able to use a possessing spirit to grab some random guard you stumble across and possess him.

As per Street Grimoire pg 197, the possessing spirit rolls an opposed roll of Force x 2 vs the target's Willpower + Intuition for living or against Object resistance if a device/object.

Preparing the vessel ahead of time grants the spirit a +6 dice boost to their side of the roll and is usually much preferred due to the bonus dice, especially if you are trying to possess some high tech item because of the Object resistance or a tougher Mook.
So you can still just possess someone randomly off the street without the prepping, it's just easier if you are using a prepared vessel.

Just keep in mind this is on par with Mind Control for NPC Horror Factor and they tend to get nervous about being around folk who hijack bodies regularly, so many go down the prepared vessel route since that mitigates it a bit by using someone who agrees to the possession ahead of time.

So it is not uncommon for the possessing mage to have another team member or a flunkie (the gun caddy or a ganger the team regularly works with for example) prepped to receive the spirit since the boost in stats can be handy in a pinch.

Do you believe in a greater WIRELESS, an Invisible(WiFi) All Seeing(detecting those connected- at least if within 100'), All Knowing(all online data) Presence that we can draw upon for Wisdom(downloads & updates), Strength (wifi boni) and Comfort (porn) or do you turn your back on it  (Go Offline)?

Yes you can
that's even a tried and true Tactic since 4the Ed
not very easy to acheive if its a "small" spirit but Possesing an unwilling Target is as usual ( but not as Successfull) for a Possesion Spirit as materialization is for a Materialization Spirit
