Title: Campaigns/Missions/Storys for 5e. Slight confustion on my end
Post by: Jedi_Wolf on <04-18-17/2311:09>
I'm a long time player but decently new GM (I guess it'll be a year with this group this summer, but I still feel quite new). When I played I felt like the majority of what we did was larger story arcs instead of one shots. But now that I'm GMing I'm having a hard time finding written out story arcs (that are finished) and I feel like I must just be failing somehow. I've done all the one shots in the quick start guide, then at PAX last year the Catalyst store had Boundless Mercy, so I picked that up and we ran that (pretty fun all in all, though a few issues, mostly with the strength of enemies at times, and a few missing bits of info). Then after a few random one shots I grabbed Splintered State and ran that (adjusted the beginning a little to not be set up as a starter mission). Now we've finished that and I'm having a hard time finding other complete (or at least complete to a point where its easy to stop and doing other runs until the next installment without it feeling weird) story lines to run. Maybe I'm just bad at searching, but I feel like everything I pull up is either 4e or still being released (like the Chicago missions, or I guess those might be done, I don't really know how to tell, but I can't get them all as one unit). I know there is going to be less for 5e now then there was for 4e at the end of its life cycle, but I feel like I should still have way more options that I'm probably just somehow missing.

Then there are the campaign books (like Market Panic, or Book of the Lost, which isn't quite out yet) that just provide some basic hooks and outlines right? No overarching story? Not that that isn't useful, and I probably need to pick one up at some point, but with limited budget I would prefer to get another full story first then maybe go for a campaign book later. But maybe I'm not fully understanding what they are.

So anyway, just looking for advice/clarification on where to go for larger multi run stories and/or what ones do people suggest (if there multiple).

An option is to take the 4th edition stories (like Artifacts, Horizon, the tempo thing) and convert them.  It's a bit more work, but I'm sure there are online tools to help with that.  And if you've done it a couple of times, it will become easier.

Another option, although a bit more work, is to write your own.  A series of five-six runs with one over arcing plot to start with and while you're doing that, you will probably get more and more ideas to use the loose ends for new runs.
Also using the player's backgrounds is a good idea.  Qualities like lost loved one are great to work into runs.

I did think about 4e stuff, though I would like to avoid the work of conversion if possible. But also there is issues in that some of my players played 4e (1 specifically I know did at least artificats, probably others) and some of them are pretty in to paying attention to the lore, so I wouldn't be able to do any 4e stories that I couldn't make work in the 5e timeline (which doesn't eliminate all of them, but definitely adds and extra level of work in making sure one converts). But I am keeping that as an option.

I am also working on writing my own, but it's not my strong suit so it's slow going. I'll get something eventually, but I won't be able to keep pace with play speed, so I need other things to fill in as well.

Thanks for the suggestions though, I'm not trying to just shoot down your ideas, I will look more into them.

I'm a big fan of drawing inspiration from movies and comic books. You don't have to copy the whole thing, but I like to use small details "like a street lamp or a phone booth".

Really, if nothing else is there a site that lists all the releases in order? That would at least give me an easy place to go look and see all the options (feels like this should exists on catalysts site, but haven't seen it).

There is.
Wikipedia :P

No seriously, they have every book for SR in the list in the year it was published...

With that said, I'm a big supporter of designing your own missions and runs. You know your team, you know you players... give em what they like, while occasionally pulling them out of their element!

And don't worry about Canon. Eventually your team is going to end up in 'uncharted waters'....

Boundless Mercy isn't on Wikipedia (so other things could be missing), which is why I was looking for other lists. But it is a pretty large list and is better then nothing, I really just find it odd that Catalyst doesn't have their own "Here is everything and the order it goes in" list. But what is is.

It's an old thread but in case you are still searching for help. I think the best for you is indeed Missions stuff, but if you want to develop your story based on some kind of official arc story (CFD & Boston crisis, and so on..), Bloody Business is the closed you'll find to the (pretty well done) 4ed books like Ghost Cartels or Emergence.

BTW, don't worry too much about the conversion work from 4ed to 5ed, Skills and Attributes are the same, and most of the gears /spells/augmentation have been updated for 5ed, so you can almost use any stats "as it is".

I just posted a list of Missions the other day on this thread:
