Sorry for coming back at all of you so soon. As is my want, I am struggling with choosing between character concepts :P Following the much appreciated feedback on my Speakers Way Adept, I approached my GM with the possibility of playing a more unusual Adept type – namely a “Savant/Spirit Way” Adept.

The concept is kind of like a Trollish Sherlock Holmes. The Distinctive Style manifests in Vashon Island Steampunk Clothes, the ever-present Sword Cane, retro-style monocles for visual enhancements etc. I was again aiming at a well-rounded successful prime runner type with some useful skills as a planner and runner on the scene.

It’s possibly a little less optimised than my Speakers Way Adept, but might be more fun to play rather than a “cookie cutter” type archetype. My only major reservation is that without my “Face” character, our group of 4 will be this guy, 2 “muscle” types and a mage (GM handling off site hacking, one of the muscle types will rely on on-site through skill wires, and all rigger types will be NPCs as well) – it’s a small group and I am concerned that it cannot take a relatively undefined character type in it, not that this fellow can’t hold his own in social situations or anything (although Kinesics was taken more in order to read others from a role-play stand point).

For both this guy, and my Speakers Way adept, the GM has let me choose 5 languages to have 1 level in due to the Linguistics power. He has not yet decided on whether or not we have to pay for gear out of BPs or whether he will allocate a “group” fund that we split as needed. The muscle types had to buy their ware of course, and were allowed 1 “non-standard” piece each without having to pay for the PQ. I think I have persuaded him to allot me the Foci mentioned below either way if I go with this character since its not exactly an optimized cookie cutter build. I have also tried to allocate KP when building the character in an “organic” fashion without maximum min-maxing if you know what I mean.

As always, thoughts much appreciated. I am more than happy to give you guys a précis background on both of the characters if you want it. Neither of them are merely sets of numbers – both have solid concepts behind them, and the speakers way guy was actually played for a while in SR3 before being retired and then dug out for the SR4 game. Same GM fiat as last time – adept powers and attribute KP costs to raise are vanilla SR4 rules. He is also incorporating all sorts of ways to make the game high powered and deadly.

I would not get improved ability for perception and assensing (the latter is not allowed strictly by RAW, although your campaign may house rule otherwise).  Instead, get the enhanced perception power, which improves both - so if you got it at 4 levels, you would effectively get 2 more dice for both perception and assensing, for the same point cost.

Assensing is an Magical Skill and can't be improved by the adept power, that's right. But Perception is a Physical Active Skills and nothing says that it is forbidden improving that by improved ability.
In general you are right, the Enhanced Perception power is the better catch, because it is cheaper and for both (see SR4A, p.195).

Such Sensor Adepts are a pain in the A**, and the GM should be sure about the things those guy could do, before he gives his OK. Because in the game it would be to late...
