I noticed recently, that one of my players was spamming cleansing, and I asked him about the drain.

He asked me "What Drain?  "

So I looked, and lo and behold, in 4e Cleansing doesn't have drain anymore.

Why did it go away? That drain made cleansing a tactical choice, not just an automatic I don't suffer from background count anymore button.

With cleansing working the way it does, why bother taking filtering?

Not sure on the Drain issue, but Cleansing cleans the entire area, while Filtering sets it up so only you, the caster, have clean mana in the area. So, if you Clean an area, every casts better, including your enemies. If you Filter, you cast better, but your enemies still have problems.
